I discovered something recently, in China Magpies are considered to be lucky, auspicious birds they call them. That’s probably the most difficult cultural distinction to reconcile, I’ve ever encountered. I mean Magpies. those mocking corvid harridans, with that grating rasping voice. The bird of omen:

One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
For for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret
Never to be told

I wonder how this distinction between Chinese culture and mine arises, are Magpies rare there? Do they not chase the song birds away every summer and murder their chicks in the nest? Turn the morning chorus into a sterile staccato with the hacking echo of their cries? Perhaps Magpies there, behave differently or maybe birdsong offends the sensibilities of the locals, who knows?
